The Old Grainstore Westport then and now.
Brimming with history, The Old Grainstore Pub Westport dates back to the 1700s. John Gibbon’s Grandfather bought the pub in 1904, and it remained in the Gibbons family until the 1980s. Over the past few years, the building was restored and renovated into a charming yet contemporary Irish whiskey bar.
The rear of the building was originally an impressive grain store and was in working order until the 1970s. This area was used for the sale of grain, animal feed, flour and fertiliser. A mini railway line that helped ferry grain carts from the store to the end of the grain yard is still visible on the floor of our beer garden today.
The front section of the building was originally a pub and a general merchant’s area. We were informed that there was an open fireplace in the pub during our renovations but that it had been closed up for approximately 40 years. After quite a lot of excavation work, we discovered the original chimney had collapsed inwards. The walls on the first and second floors of the building had to be opened to clean out the vast amount of debris in the chimney and get it working again. After an extensive search, the old fireplace was found and carefully restored to working order. This fireplace is now a much-loved focal point of our front bar, especially on cold winter evenings.
Another important discovery in our renovations was the original and rare pharmacy cabinets and drawers in the general merchant’s section of the building. Over 100 years old, they are now fully restored and feature in our front bar. For lovers of history and historians, these cabinets contain an eclectic treasure chest of original memorabilia from the 1900s.
As with all restoration projects, our work on the building is ongoing and a labour of love. Every inch of the building is packed with character and has a story to tell. If you have any questions about the history of the building, please do not hesitate to ask us.
